Overview

Spanning 124 acres, Crown Farm Preserve offers a glimpse into Hopkinton’s agricultural and cultural history. The northern hillsides, once open pasture, have long since grown back to forest, while the southern hilltop along Tomaquag Road remains active hay fields. Between them lies a broad wetland complex—once a cranberry bog—where generations of local children skated in winter.
Two small cemeteries lie within the preserve, the larger of which is Native American, reflecting the long human history of this landscape. Today, Crown Farm’s mix of field, forest, and wetland provides valuable wildlife habitat and illustrates the layers of change that define southern Rhode Island’s countryside.

Community Projects

Poetry of the Wild at Crown Farm Preserve
Poetry of the Wild is an art project created by ecological artist Ana Flores, using handcrafted “poetry boxes” that pair writing and visual art to encourage people to explore and engage with local landscapes. The project began in 2003 with the Wood-Pawcatuck Watershed Association and has since been installed in communities across the country and abroad. At Crown Farm Preserve, a poetry box installation features "Cedar Tree Between Two Rivers," a poem by Wanda Hopkins, an educator, writer, and Narragansett culture-bearer.

Eagle Scout Footbridge Project
In June 2025, Eagle Scout Cameron Coggeshall of Hopkinton Troop 121 designed and built a wooden footbridge at Crown Farm Preserve. Working alongside fellow Scouts and volunteers, Cameron created a sturdy, well-crafted structure that enhances the trail experience for visitors and supports ongoing stewardship of the property. Be sure to check it out on your next visit—and a big thank-you to Cameron and all the volunteers for their hard work.
